School Board honors Periwinkle Student All Stars

On Thursday, the School Board honored Student All-Stars from Periwinkle Elementary School for their motivation, perseverance, growth, and school and community service.

Periwinkle students are:

Mia Hernandez

Mia is a dedicated worker who takes pride in her work. She  goes above and beyond with her assignments. She is always looking for ways to push her thinking and learning. She is also a caring individual who helps others. She has been a part of establishing a school newspaper staffed by fifth-grade students utilizing Chromebooks and Google Docs.

Alexis Moreno

Alexis embodies perseverance and determination. He approaches everything he does with a positive attitude. Alexis has shown amazing academic and social growth in his time at Periwinkle. He has blossomed from being a shy, reserved learner to a regular contributor in class. He has exited the English Language Learner program through hard work and effort.

Voters pass Ballot Measure 22-165 for new schools and improvements

Greater Albany voters approved Measure 22-165 in the May 16 election with a passing rate of  54 percent.

“We want to thank our community for its support of our schools,” said Superintendent Jim Golden. “This measure will make a difference to kids and to our whole community.”

The bond will:

  • Fix aging school buildings
  • Make energy improvements
  • Make school safety and security improvements
  • Add/expand vocational and technical classrooms at all middle and high schools
  • Relieve overcrowding and accommodate growth

The planning process will begin immediately. A project timeline and plan will be announced in the coming weeks and will include opportunities for community involvement.

Election Day is today. Ballots are due by 8 p.m.

Tomorrow is Election Day. Cast your vote before the polls close at 8 p.m. The District bond measure, Measure 22-165, and school board races will be decided.

Ballots are due by 8 p.m. Official ballot drop boxes are at Linn County Courthouse, North Albany Shopping Center and Albany Public Library.

Superintendent Golden announces principal selection for Periwinkle

A new principal has been selected to serve at Periwinkle Elementary School for the 2017-18 school year. The following is a statement by Superintendent Jim Golden:

We are pleased to announce that after a thorough hiring process involving almost 30 stake-holders, that Chaundra Smith has been selected to serve as the next Principal at Periwinkle Elementary.

Mrs. Smith has been an educator in the Corvallis School District at both the elementary and middle school level for twenty years.  In that time, she has worked as a dual-language classroom teacher, district ELD Coordinator and instructional coach. The committee was impressed with her approachable affect, her clear communication style and her passion for under-served students. She is also known as a skilled facilitator and a systems thinker.

We are very excited to welcome Mrs. Smith to the Periwinkle and GAPS family.

Please join us for “PTT Family Fun Day, BBQ and Silent Auction” on May 19th.  We look forward to seeing everyone there!  Advanced sales for Meal Tickets and Wristbands are available for purchase between May 5th and May 18th for $5.00 each per person (Look for form in Friday Folders).  Prices will be $6.00 at the door for each and cash payment will only be accepted.  Wristbands include unlimited use of:  Lollipop pull, tattoo parlor, 2-liter ring toss, face painting, football toss, inflatable, slingshot game, deck your favorite roadrunner.
